Rick Quan

Gala 2018 Keynote Speaker: Phil Ting

Rick Quan is a two time Emmy award winner with more than 30 years of on-air experience in the San Francisco television market. He is the first Chinese American television sportscaster in the country and the first Asian American male to be a full-time anchor in San Francisco. His Rick Quan Productions has done work for the Chinese Historical Society of America, Kristi Yamaguchi's Always Dream Foundation, and Kimochi. Rick is also an award-winning documentarian, he is currently working on a documentary on the late San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee.

Rick has always believed it's important to be active in the community. He has emceed and worked with dozens of Bay Area organizations. In 2008, the Chinese American Political Association presented him with its Community Achievement Award and in 2013, the Organization of Chinese Americans recognized him for being a pioneer in the broadcasting field.

Gala 2018 Special Guest: Miss Chinatown USA 2018, Jasmine Lee

Jasmine is a proud San Francisco native and Miss Chinatown USA 2018. Growing up, she trained in the conservatory-style theater program at the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts. She later went on to study Cognitive Science and Computer Science at UC Berkeley. She is now a Software Engineer at Microsoft. She is a proud to champion female engineers of Silicon Valley and honor the legacy of her immigrant ancestors.

Gala 2018 Keynote Speaker: Phil Ting

Phil Ting was elected to the State Assembly in 2012, representing the 19th Assembly District, which spans the Westside of San Francisco as well as the communities of Broadmoor, Colma, Daly City, and South San Francisco.

As California navigates new challenges from the federal government, Ting is focused on protecting and persisting onward with progressive policies that expand opportunity for all, equal rights, and protections for our environment. Informed by past roles in the financial sector and as the San Francisco Assessor-Recorder, Ting has become a leading voice on California's finances. He now serves as Chair of the Assembly Budget Committee after having served as Chair of the Assembly Committee on Revenue and Taxation.

Ting has authored legislation that:

  • helps thousands more students obtain Cal Grants to attend college;
  • increase assistance provided to pregnant and parenting foster youth;
  • increases healthy food access through expanding urban agriculture and food stamp use at farmers' markets;
  • assists English-language learners to understand prescription medications and engage state government;
  • ensures safe and equal restroom access and tax fairness for the LGBT community;
  • protects the voting rights of people living with disabilities;
  • requires consumer disclosure in clean energy labels; and
  • helps homeowners invest in water and energy efficient technologies.

Ting is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley and Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. He began his career in public service as the Executive Director of the Asian Law Caucus, an organization founded in 1972 to advance and promote the legal and civil rights of the Asian Pacific Islander community, and once served as Community Relations Director at San Francisco State University. In 2005, Ting was appointed Assessor-Recorder of San Francisco by then-Mayor Gavin Newsom, where he closed a five-year assessment backlog and brought in $290 million in unpaid property taxes to the city, created a program to increase rooftop solar installations, and spearheaded efforts to assist homeowners and tenants facing foreclosure.

Ting lives in San Francisco's Sunset District with his wife, Susan, and their two children.

Darlene Mar

Darlene Mar - Gala 2018 - Harold T. Yee Lifetime Achievement Award

Darlene Mar has been an advocate for small and minority business and their issues at local, state, and federal levels for over 25 years. Her experiences and contacts have uniquely equipped her in her role as a consultant and event planner for both the public and private sectors.

Mar served as one of the elected delegates from California for the 1995 White House Conference on Small Businesses. She had formed a group of Asian American delegates who were responsible in getting several recommendations approved and submitted to Congress.

Mar continues to be a member of several community nonprofits. She has served as the West Coast President of the National Council of Asian American Business Associations, Chair of Communications for the Council of Asian American Business Associations in California, advisor, and business development director for Asian Business Association of Silicon Valley. She is a current board member of the Greenlining Institute, and social and economic equity advocacy organization of which ASIAN, Inc. is a coalition member. She has served on various diversity and procurement advisory committees for Fortune 500 and other private companies, including AT&T, MCI, and Merrill Lynch. She has served on PG&E's Community Advisory Committee, Office of the President of University of California Advisory Committee and Wells Fargo Community Advisory Committee. She was appointed by two California Insurance Commissioners to be part of the statewide Insurance Advisory Committee and was a former San Francisco Small Business Advisory Commissioner under two mayors. She also served on San Francisco's Local Business Enterprise Advisory Committee during the administration of the late Mayor Ed Lee.

Mar has received numerous awards for her leadership and for producing results. One such award, from the U.S. Department of Commerce's Minority Business Development Agency, summarized her lifetime achievement in one sentence: "In appreciation and recognition for her volunteer efforts and dedication to minority business and its community."

Miguel Galarza

Gala 2018 Honoree: Miguel Galarza

Mr. Galarza is a Native San Franciscan having 34 years of experience in multi-million-dollar civil, environmental, wetlands, and IDIQ program management projects. He has estimated, negotiated, and managed projects incorporating Divisions 1 through 48, with special expertise in utility distribution systems, structural concrete, and environmental wetland restoration & construction.

As President, Mr. Galarza oversees all cost and technical proposals and operational management related to Yerba Buena Engineering. He has successfully managed contracts for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), U.S. Air Force, US Fish & Wildlife, NOAA, National Park Service, U.S. Navy, Department of Veterans Affairs, and General Service Administration as well as for the City and County of San Francisco and CALTRANS.

Mr. Galarza has been called to testify for the California US Congressional Representatives on the US Small Business Committee in Washington DC and the California Legislator in Sacramento CA, regarding small business issues.

Comedian

Justin Lucas

Gala 2018 Comedian: Justin Lucas
San Francisco native, Justin Lucas, has comedianized for the last 7 years, having performed in popular venues in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Atlanta and many other cities that provide affordable healthcare plans to local residents. Though short in stature and with jet black Fabio-like hair, features attributed to his mother and father respectively, Justin soon realized his comedic talents, winning 1st place in the 2013 "The Mic Is Hot Comedy Competition," becoming a semi-finalist in the 2012 "San Francisco International Comedy Competition," and being awarded the 2015 Best Male Comedian by the "Bay Area Reporter." After branching out into acting, both stage and television, he appeared in the HBO series, Looking, season 2 (episode 2 at 23 min 27 sec), opposite Jonathan Groff. An eclectic entertainer, Justin continues his stand-up comedy career, writes and performs sketch comedy with the San Francisco based group, "Killing My Lobster," all the while pursuing his work as a voice-over artist, an ability showcased in his stand-up performances.

Gala 2018 Special Guest: Miss Chinatown San Francisco 2018, Maggie Huang
Maggie Huang, current Miss Chinatown San Francisco and a caring practice coordinator at University of San Francisco Medical Center. Maggie immigrated to San Francisco at a young age with her family. Through continuously being a volunteer at Chinese Full Make Center, an organization that helps Asian immigrants to assimilate into the American lifestyle and traditions, she learned to appreciate her Chinese heritage even more. Being an ambassador who is passionate to help bridges gap between western and Chinese cultures, Maggie is enthralled to bring positive energy to my community, the home to talent, innovation, and diverse cultures.
